Observation Narrative ? A moderately steep, very bouldery northern hardwood forest just above the Forest Road to Whitetop summit; dominated by Betula alleghaniensis (overstory), Acer spicatum (shrub layer), and Dryopteris intermedia (herb layer). Bryophyte-covered boulders cover virtually 100% of the slope surface and precluded the collection of a soil sample. Bryophyte mats, Interstitial litter, and humus provide the footholds for a surprising density of herbaceous plants. A few of the Betula alleghaniensis individuals are large, gnarled, and likely fairly old. Some Acer saccharum and Fagus grandifolia are present in the canopy and subcanopy, but are outnumbered by, and smaller than, the Betula. Umbilicate lichens are locally common on the larger rock surfaces.
